Composer - Geoff Stephens

Geoff Stephens was born in London and began his writing career with the formation of his own company, The Four Arts Society, specialising in the presentation of original revues. He subsequently became involved in the popular music field, becoming one of England's most successful contemporary writers with a host of top twenty hits to his credit. Several of these reached the No.1 position in the UK or USA charts (not forgetting the rest of the world !) and were also award winning records. He has twice received the Ivor Novello Bronze Statuette Award for Best Pop Song of the Year: in 1966 for Winchester Cathedral and in 1974 for You Won't Find Another Fool Like Me. He has also received the Ivor Novellor Certificate of Honour for Outstanding Contribution to British Popular Music for The Lights of Cincinatti, Like Sister and Brother, Doctor's Orders and Knock, Knock Who's There? - the latter also won first prize in the BBC's A song for Europe and second prize in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1970. Other awards include American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers Award of Merit, National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences Grammy Award and Broadcast Music Inc. of America Citation of Merit. Amongst others, his songs have been recorded by Frank Sinatra, Cliff Richard, James Last, Tom Jones, Elvis Presley, Sammy Davis Jnr, Manfred Mann, Crystal Gayle, The Hollies, David Soul, The New Seekers, The Carpenters, Hot Chocolate, Olivia Newton John, Herman's Hermits and Brenda Lee. Some of his many well known songs are Winchester Cathedral, There's a Kind of Hush, The Crying Game, Smile a Little Smile for Me, Sorry Suzanne, Goodbye Sam, Hello Samantha, Semi-Detached Suburban Mr James, You Won't find Another Fool Like Me, I'll Put You Together Again, Silver Lady and Daddy Don't You Walk So Fast. In 1995 Geoff received the BASCA Gold Badge Award for his contribution to the music industry and in the Summer of 2000 he received his fourth Ivor Novello Award - The Jimmy Kennedy Award for Maintaining The Art and Heritage of The British Songwriting Industry.
